How Often Should You Cut Curly Hair? The Truth May Surprise You ✂️

One of the biggest myths in haircare? That curls need frequent trims. The truth is, curly hair needs far fewer haircuts than straight hair.

Because curls naturally coil and spiral, they take longer to show visible growth — and the tighter the curl pattern, the more “spring factor” you have, meaning you can go longer between cuts.

Wavies, on the other hand, may benefit from more regular shaping — especially if their style depends on volume, layers, or structure.

As a Fremantle curly hairdresser, I often guide clients through what’s right for their specific curl type, lifestyle, and preferences. Here are some things to consider:

✂️ When to Consider a Trim or Reshape:

You’re noticing flatness at the crown and width at the ends (hello, triangle hair )

Your curls feel dry, frizzy, or undefined — especially at the ends

Your current cut isn’t falling or shaping well anymore

A change in season, air conditioning, heat, or health is affecting your hair

You simply want that fresh, cathartic haircut feeling

Sometimes what your hair needs isn’t a cut at all — it might be a treatment to bring back bounce, softness, and hydration.

But if it’s been a while since your last trim and you’re noticing some tell-tale signs, a reshape might just be the refresh you need.

Why your Curls Might be Changing...

Discover how hormonal changes can affect your curls and why it’s totally normal to experience shifts in texture, volume, or curl pattern. A must-read from your trusted Perth curly hairdresser, specialising in holistic hair and health support.

If you've noticed your curls looking a little different lately, you're not imagining things. As a dedicated Perth curly hairdresser, I often hear clients say, “I think I’m getting old,” when their hair starts acting up. But the truth is, your hair isn’t misbehaving — it’s simply adjusting.

Hormones + Hair = Constant Change

Our bodies are in a continual state of hormonal flux. Puberty, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, menopause, and even hormone replacement therapy can all influence how your curls behave. It’s not uncommon for natural curls to disappear, reappear, or even emerge for the first time during these life phases.

This is especially important to understand if you’re searching for a curly hairdresser in Fremantle or curly hair specialist in Perth who truly understands the link between your hair and your hormones.

Hair Loss & Texture Shifts Are Normal

Hair thinning or shedding — especially around the crown or hairline — can feel unsettling. But these changes are often completely normal and reversible. Your curl pattern may also become looser, tighter, or more frizzy as hormones fluctuate.

That’s where the right curly hair care routine comes in. A detox for your scalp and strands can help reset your hair’s health. And sometimes, a quick consultation with a curly hair expert can uncover what’s really going on beneath the surface.

            It’s Not a Decline — It’s a Transition

Let’s reframe the narrative. This isn’t a downward spiral — it’s a period of adjustment. With the right products, cuts, and support from a trusted Fremantle curly hairdresser, you can embrace the changes and keep your curls thriving.

If you’re experiencing changes in your curls, don’t stress — you’re not alone.

A visual guide to understanding the different curl types — from soft waves to tight coils — using the LOHY Curl Library. Learn how 2A to 4C textures differ and why most people have more than one curl pattern.

Ever wondered where your curls sit on the spectrum? From soft waves (2A) to coily magic (4C), the Curl Library (see photo below) is a great guide — but remember, most of us have multi-textured hair. It’s totally normal for your curls to not fit neatly into one box.

That’s why I always ask you to arrive with your hair fully out, minimal product, and not tied back — so I can see your unique curl pattern in its natural glory. Every curly cut is tailored just for you ✂️✨

           Wavy Hair (Type 2)

2A: Soft, loose waves with minimal frizz and very little curl definition. Often fine in texture and easily weighed down by heavy products.

2B: Waves become more defined with a subtle “S” shape. You may start to notice some frizz and a little more volume.

2C: Strong “S” waves, thicker texture, and more prone to frizz. Often mistaken for curls, but still considered wavy. A gentle curl cream or gel works wonders here.

            Curly Hair (Type 3)

3A: Loose, large ringlets with a shiny, well-defined curl pattern. These curls are springy and tend to be on the finer side.

3B: Tighter ringlets, more volume, and usually coarser than 3A. These curls need more moisture and frizz control.

3C: Dense, corkscrew curls that are tight and springy. The strands are usually packed close together, giving the hair a lot of natural volume.

            Coily Hair (Type 4)

4A: Soft, tight coils with an obvious S-pattern. Hair tends to retain moisture better than 4B or 4C but still benefits from deep conditioning.

4B: Z-shaped curls with a fluffy, cotton-like texture. These curls bend rather than coil and can shrink up significantly.

4C: The tightest and most fragile curl type, 4C has little to no defined curl pattern. It’s beautiful, dense, and full of shrinkage — but needs lots of hydration and gentle handling.

            Multi-Textured? That’s Normal!

Most people don’t fit neatly into one curl type. It’s super common to have multiple textures on different parts of your head — especially after hormonal changes, colour treatments, or heat styling. That’s why I always ask clients to arrive with hair down, minimal product, and dry — so I can get a true sense of your curl pattern.

As a dedicated curly hairdresser in Perth, I tailor every cut to your unique curl blend. Whether you’re a 2B-3A mix or rocking glorious 4C coils, you deserve a cut that honours your natural texture.

Hydration isn't just applying conditioner...

Hydrated curls start with water — not just conditioner. Learn why removing sulphates and silicones might be the best first step on your curly journey. A must-read for anyone looking for a curly hairdresser in Fremantle or Perth who understands the science behind thriving, frizz-free curls.

Hydrated Curls Start with Water — Not Just Conditioner

Let’s get one thing clear — true hydration doesn’t come from slathering on handfuls of conditioner. Real hydration starts with water.

But here’s the catch: water alone evaporates quickly, especially in our dry, Aussie climate (WA, we see you ).

That’s why we need the right conditioning formulas to lock in moisture and create soft, healthy curls — not brittle, frizzy strands.

As a curly hairdresser, I see it all the time: curls crying out for hydration because the shampoo is doing more harm than good. If your cleanser is packed with stripping sulphates, no amount of conditioner can undo the damage. You're washing out the very thing your hair needs most.

Then there’s silicone. Ingredients like Dimethicone or anything ending in ‘-cone’ create a plastic-like coating over the hair. This can offer protection, but when combined with a harsh sulphate shampoo, you can end up with dry, frizzy hair that feels coated but not truly nourished.

            Starting Your Curly Hair Journey?

Try removing both sulphates and silicones to give your hair a clean slate. You might be surprised how quickly your natural oils rebalance, and how curls begin to form more freely with consistent, gentle care.

When you use hydrating formulas that actually penetrate the hair shaft, you plump the hair from within — rather than layering up on the surface. And that’s when the magic happens… curls start thriving. Hair starts growing. You begin to notice more bounce, less breakage, and a curl pattern that finally feels like you.

Curl formation is all about balance:

✨ Water plumps the curl.
✨ Emollients/conditioners hold it in.
✨ Then you choose your styling hold — whether that’s soft and free-flowing or defined and controlled.

Not sure which products or techniques suit your hair best?

My Curly Hairdresser Story

It was never my intention to become a curly hair specialist.

When I emigrated to Australia 10 years ago, I arrived as a freelance film hair stylist and complementary health practitioner — drawn here by a deep desire to live more harmoniously with the natural world. Australia, the home of permaculture, felt like the perfect place to explore that path.

Those roots still run deep, but what I didn’t expect was to tumble headfirst into the curl revolution. A space where embracing natural beauty, authentic texture, and gentle, natural products felt not only fun — but totally aligned with my values.

When people ask, “How did you get into curly hairdressing?” — especially with my own wavy… OK, OK, straight hair! — it’s a fair question. I’m not your typical curl expert on the surface. But it was Neel from Loves Curls who introduced me to his curly planet, and the rest is history.

Back then, there wasn’t much curly hair support around. I remember the buzz in Fitzroy, Melbourne — people would travel from all over just to have their curls understood. It was wild, creative, and soul-affirming.

Training at Deva Curl in NYC was another unexpected chapter — a beautiful, immersive dive into curl artistry that sparked something lasting in me.

And now? I’m loving life as a curl-friendly hairdresser in Fremantle. Still fairly new on the WA scene, I’m meeting the most incredible humans and finding joy in helping others embrace their natural texture.

Being a Perth curly hairdresser wasn’t part of the original plan — but I’m so glad the path unfolded the way it did
